What to Wear to Outdoor Fall Events

Looking sharp when the weather can’t make up its mind.

Fall might be my favourite season for men’s fashion. Wool jackets, leather boots, knitwear, scarves — suddenly, getting dressed becomes a lot more interesting.

But outdoor fall events can be tricky. An afternoon garden party, an outdoor business gathering, or a weekend festival might start under beautiful sunshine and end with you wishing you’d brought another layer.

So, what should men wear to outdoor events in the fall? My answer is simple: dress for the occasion, but never forget the weather.

1. Men’s Fall Layering: Start With the Right Clothes

The biggest mistake I see is dressing for the temperature when you leave the house rather than the temperature a few hours later.

An Oxford shirt under a lightweight wool sweater is a good starting point. Add a suede jacket, a field jacket, or a relaxed blazer depending on the event.

I particularly like a mock-neck sweater under a blazer. It’s comfortable, understated, and looks more considered than an ordinary T-shirt.

If you’re unsure about sweater styles, read my guide to men’s sweater necklines.

2. Best Men’s Fall Outfits for Outdoor Events

For a casual fall festival or weekend gathering, I’d go with dark jeans, a textured sweater, and a lightweight jacket.

For an outdoor networking event or business casual gathering, I’d choose tailored chinos, an Oxford shirt, and an unstructured blazer.

And for a slightly dressier autumn reception? A fine-knit turtleneck, wool trousers, and a classic overcoat are difficult to beat.

You don’t need a different wardrobe for every invitation. A few versatile pieces can handle most occasions. If you’re considering a coat, my wool coat vs puffer jacket guide explains where each makes sense.

3. Best Shoes for Outdoor Fall Events

This is where I think many men get it wrong.

Beautiful leather dress shoes might work perfectly indoors. On wet grass or muddy pathways, they’re not always the smartest choice.

For most outdoor autumn events, I’d recommend Chelsea boots, leather boots with suitable rubber soles, or clean minimalist sneakers if the dress code allows.

Suede can look fantastic in fall, but I’d leave my favourite suede shoes at home when heavy rain is expected.

4. Fall Fashion Colours for Men: Keep It Classic

Autumn is perfect for olive green, burgundy, chocolate brown, camel, navy, and charcoal.

A brown jacket with cream knitwear and dark trousers is one of my favourite combinations.

But you don’t need to dress like the autumn leaves. Two or three complementary colours are usually enough. Texture can provide the rest of the character.

5. What Should Men Avoid Wearing to Outdoor Fall Events?

I’d avoid overly thin jackets, uncomfortable shoes, and outfits that only look good while standing still.

And don’t overdress simply because the invitation says business casual. A well-fitting shirt, good trousers, and a relaxed jacket can look far better than an unnecessarily formal suit.

Always check the dress code, the ground conditions, and the evening weather forecast.

My rule? Dress well enough to enjoy the event, and comfortably enough to forget about your clothes. Good style should make the occasion better, not become another thing to worry about.
